Gorge

As the Tallulah river carved its way through the rocks of NE Georgia and formed the picturesque Tallulah Gorge (pictured here,) its path became diverted and no longer flowed into the Upper Chatahooche watershed, instead becoming part of what is now the Tugaloo watershed. This broken link between the two rivers lead to the development of different species that once shared a common gene pool when the watersheds were connected. This and other such speciation events led to Georgia's 300+ plus freshwater fish species count, one of the highest in the nation.
